Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem Police Sergeant Mickey Hutchens has died from injuries he sustained during a shootout with a suspect last week.
Police chief Scott Cunningham made the announcement during a press conference on Monday night.
A spokesperson with the City of Winston-Salem said Hutchens condition began to deteriorate on October 10. A neurosurgeon at Baptist Hospital previously said Hutchens was "critical" and "grave" condition, according to police.
Hutchens was responding to a robbery alarm at the Bojangles' on Peters Creek Parkway with Officer Daniel Clark when they saw Monte Evans run behind the building. The officers chased Evans into the nearby creek. That's when Evans pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Hutchens in the face.
Evans then pulled the gun on Clark, shooting him in the torso and near the neckline. Clark returned fired, killing Evans. Investigators later revealed that Evan was at the restaurant to see his ex-wife.
Clark was released from the hospital two days later. He is still recovering from his injuries.
Hutchens was with the Winston-Salem Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and their two daughters

Prayers sent for Hutchens' family and for Officer Clark. It really upsets me when a tragedy like this happens to the good guys.

It's just not right and I blame "the watchdogs" and those who claim the officer can't shoot until shot at. Well, that shot took the life of a brave protector of the people.
My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to all involved. I only hope they can somehow make some sense of this. I hope their faith can sustain them.
