Both eyes open when aiming « Thread Started on Sept 17, 2009, 10:41am »
Several years ago my father-in-law gave me a book titled "Sixguns" by Elmer Kieth. In the chapter "Learning to Shoot", Kieth instructs to keep both eyes open but to only aim with one eye and let the other eye simply look at the target. So that's what I've done ever since. When I do this I end up seeing 2 guns and sometimes 2 targets. When shooting right handed I use the gun on the left and the target on the right...and vise versa. I don't know all the benefits of this method, but I suppose it eliminates squinting and improves your periferal vision. What's techniques do y'all use when aiming?

Same two eyes open style for "combat" training. I believe improving your peripheral vision is the goal here. Tunnel vision, according to my NYPD buddy who trained me, is what you want to avoid in order to see multiple threats. No Rambo stuff here, just real world theory.
I know bench rest rifle shooters who practice this in order to see the wind flags.

I've never been able to do that, with both eyes open... I have problems as it is, with a dominant left eye and aiming with my right one - and now that my sight is so poor, especially wearing tri-focals, I'm having problems seeing my front sight; soon I'll be needing a pointer eye-seeing dog.

I'm right handed, left eye dominant also. I keep both eyes open when shooting handguns, tilt my head a little so my left eye aims. With long guns, I half close my left eye to help me aim with my right. Of course it's a lot easier with a scope. My eyes are getting worse too, Pete. I've got tri-focals, but I'm thinking about moving my arm length distance focus to the top of the eyeglass frames for a pair of shooting glasses.

I like that 16gauge! I would think that would be best in low lit environments...so you can avoid being blinded by muzzle flash
Moon, were they using scopes ?..that would sure be tricky...one eye watching flags and the other looking at the target via magnification ...I bet that requires a lot of training!

Yup, these guys were using the 36 power scopes that enabled them to see poop on a fly's butt at 200yds. There were a few guys that competed nationally. I had to be honest with myself and "set my sights" on my level of shooter, realizing I could never compete with the big boys. Their scores were almost always a perfect 250, with the winner shooting 25X and the next guy shooting 22-24X. I was absolutely ecstatic if I could get one perfect target on one of the five relays. What really impressed me was that they were the friendliest, most helpful guys I ever shot with.
